A few weeks later, the girl was riding at a friend’s house. “The horse took off. Her stirrups were too long and she was using a western saddle - totally unfamiliar,” Ms. Laurie said. Unable to let go of the horn long enough to rein in the horse, the frightened child jumped off. “But she remembered the vaulting lesson. She used her hands, she tucked her head, and she rolled,” the instructor said.

The child was not only unipjured. She was back on the horse in 15 minutes (this time with a lounge line). “And now she’s so much more secure,” Ms. Laurie added. “She’s taken the worst a horse can offer and prevailed.”
