A former carriage house is now a workshop. The building at the southeast comer is used by Dwight Matthews as archtectural studio and office. In the center of the property is a 16-foot-square building which boasts three-foot-high wainscotting of continuous wide pine boards.
Running along the east side of the yard and eight feet below street level is a stone wall which had been part of the sunken garden when the property was owned by the Cary family. It was the Carys who named it both “711 Main St.,” an arbitrary number, and later “Althea Terrace” since althea shrubs were used to screen the property from the street. Abelia shrubs have since replaced the altheas however the house number “711” remains.
Since moving here in 1986, the Matthews continue to renovate and restore the house once owned by Jennifer’s aunt and uncle, Maxine and Frank Cary.
