Flu shots available
The Rappahannock County Health Department will begin administering the 1992-93 flu vaccine in October which will hopeftilly provide immunity from the most common varieties of flu throughout the season. Although most people are ill for only a few days with flu, some people at risk can become quite ill and the flu can be life threatening. *
The following groups are at increased risk for serious illness with I the flu and should receive vaccine: All people 66 years of age or older, adults and children with long-term heart or lung problems, people who have a type of cancer or immunological disorder (or who use cer- • tain types of medications) that lowers the body’s normal resistance to infections and children and teenagers on long-term treatment with aspirin, who if they catch the flu may be at risk for getting Reye Syndrome.
Flu shots are also recommended for those who work with the public and medical personnel because of their increased risk for exposure.
Most people have no side effects from the recent infiienza vaccines. Unfortunately, Medicare is not covering the cost of the flu vaccine as in years past. For a person over 65 years of age or if you have a high risk medical condition listed above, the cost is $7. The charge for all other persons will be $12.
