Nevertheless, Mr. Bankston said he was not sure bears are a serious problem. He said most of the bear complaints he has received are from five or six people and that 10 bears have been trapped in one orchard. He said he had never received a complaint about a bear attacking anyone unless provoked, and he had received a report about an unprovoked fox attack. He said when he receives a call about a bear causing damage, he tries to trap the bear and that is almost always successful.

He said if trapping is not successful, he will issue the landowner permission to shoot the bear if there is substantial damage, but that bears eating downed apples or a few ears of corn aren’t doing substantial dam
