Ellis Bingham said that allowing land use taxation for absentee owners is increasing the taxes of the people who live in Rappahannock County: He said about 60 percent of the land in the land use program is owned by people who do not live in the county.
He said state mandates are increasing county taxes. “We need to, take a hard look at what is best for the taxpayer,” he said. “This is simply narrowing our tax base.”
Hampton District representative Mike Massie said that requiring landowners to produce something on their land to qualify for land use taxation is benefitting the county. He said that feeder cattle prices have dropped recently.
