At the time physical disability from combat wounds forced Jim Stockdale’s retirement from military life, he had the distinction of being the only three-star officer in the history of the Navy to wear both aviator wings and the Congressional Medal of Honor.
He received 25 other combat decorations as well, included two Distinguished Flying Crossers, three Distinguished Service Medals, four Silver Star Medals and two Purple Hearts. As a civilian, Jim has been a college professor and college president, and is now in his 10th year at Stanford. His writing have been widely published, mostly with the central theme of how man can rise in dignity to prevail in the face of adversity.
His most recent books are: “A Vietnam Experience: Ten Years of Reflection” which won the 1985 Honor Prize for Books from the Freedom Foundation at Valley Forge, and “In Love and War” - a book co-authored with his wife.
