In the junior optimum pace, Rappahannock representatives Van Carney and Kevin Selby took the first place trophy in their very first attempt at the competition. Carney rode Ashley, with Selby mounted aboard Salazar.
“Ashley is a 12-year-old standardbred,” explained Carney. “That is why she can trot so fast....we trotted a lot of the course because of the footing.” Standing at 14.3, Ashley is a first-flight hunter with the Rappahannock pack.
Salazar, a pure-bred Arabian, was pressed into double duty Sunday, finishing first in the junior jumping pace and finishing third with rider Eleanor Denegre (with partner Julie Yowell) in the flat pace.
In the Manassas open pace, an optimum division open to non-hunt members, riders representing the Fairfax Hunt came closest to the set time. Ann Denison rode her Chesapeake and Stephanie Malevich rode Remy to finish in 15:02.
“We really took it slow,” said Malevich. “We were just out here for the fun of it. A special part of this ride was that this was Ann’s firstever hunter pace.”
