we got h^r a horse. I sort of crept back in to the business, starting with the girls,” she said.
The Collettes have three daughters — Karen, who lives in Alexandria, Sheila, who lives California, and Claire, who lives in Atlanta.
“Anyway, in 1977, .we moved out here to the country,” Collette said. “The horses just tended to accumulate. We decided then that we’d get into the breeding business.
“I became friends with [Rockbum Farm’s] Mike Hughes, and since we needed better blood to sell higher, I got him to shop for a thoroughbred mare for us.”
The mare was Flower Bow, purchased at the Ocala breeding sale. The Collettes were in the breeding business for real. Early in her connection with the mare, Collette realized she might have something special.
“I guess it was when the mare just jogged up and jumped over one of our three-board fences that we realized jumping was in our future,” she said, laughing.
Bred first to hunter stallion Catch A Dream, Flower Bow threw from that pairing the successful show and field hunter Vari Dreami, now belonging to Bill and Cathy Osier of Orlean.
