uuLjUKo — (also siiks, racing silks) The jacket and cap worn by the rider designate the ownership of the horse. They are made of nylon, silk, satin or lycra. Colors for flatracing are registered with the Jockey Club to avoid duplication. Steeplechase and point-to-point owners need not register silks, but many do to protect their choice.
Colors which show up well against green background are most often chosen. Orange, red and hot pink are popular selections.
DEAD HEAT — When two or more horses cross the finish line simultaneously, officials may call the race a dead heat. This is a rarity, but it does happen, even with the advent of high-tech camera photo-finish machines.
