However, lawmakers are split over whether state inspectors should be allowed into church-run day care centers, which comprise a large share of all providers. The House has approved such legislation, but Senate lawmakers contend such a law violates the spirit of religious freedom.
The House version would allow inspectors to enter a church center once a year and would provide the inspector the right to enter if a complaint is received through a new telephone hotline.
The question of including churches under the regulations will go before a House and Senate conference committee later this week. Although lawmakers and childadvocates praise the House legislation, they teel the Senate’s vote to remove churches undermines the entire intent of the legislation, since many churches provide day care.
