WEIGHTS - Riders are checked for proper weights as they weigh-out for a race prior to tacking up their mount. Upon return from the race, the rider asks a steward for permission to dismount.
The official watches the rider untack and walk to the scales to weigh-in to assure that he does not receive more weights to tip the scales at the proper weight. The weight carried by a runner includes rider and clothing, saddle, pads, girths and yokes or breast collars. The weight does not take into account protective gear — the helmet and flak jacket. The whip is not included in the weight either.
WHIP — (Also stick, bat, crop) A whip is used by a rider to urge the horse forward, keep him on a straight course or to retain speed in the finish.
WINGS — The wings of a fence funnel runners into the jump portion of the obstacle.
