Since the very beginning of his training career, Berryman has had marked success with his keen eye for ’chasing prospects found at the race track.
“Even from a very early age, Mike was a whiz with young and problem horses, the type you’d get cheap off the track,” said Rob Banner. “He still has that knack to help convert them into talented athletes.
“Instead of being washed-up basket cases, these horses could function as jumpers....The horses seem to like Mike’s process and respond to it,” he added.
With his documented success rate with ’chasers, in his next step of training Berryman accepted McMillan’s invitation to set up in at their farm in Franklin for a few seasons beginning in 1987. Berryman’s new training grounds were near Nashville, close to those of international race rider George Sloan, and his string of clientele continued to grow.
