Steeplechase trainer Mike Berryman wrapped up the ’92 season in eighth place on the National Steeplechase and Hunt Association leading trainer’s list. The affable Virginia native turned Tennessean enjoyed a stream of successes in his banner ’92 race season during which he trained 25 percent runners in the frame from 71 sanctioned starters.
From those starts, his runners earned over $73,000. Additionally he raced extensively on the Virginia point-to-point circuit, sending out winners at many local meetings from the earliest of the spring races to the final VSA fixture at Shenandoah. He was also named Midwest Hunt Race Association leading trainer in ’92.
Berryman is a fixture on the Virginia ’chasing circuit and has been for most of his 41 years. Well-known for his knack at turning flat racers into consistently successful jumpers, Berryman recently added another feather to his ’chasing cap. In December, he accepted a position as private trainer to Jonesborough, Tenn. owner-breeder Tony Garland.
