LENGTH — Races are won or lost by a certain number of lengths. A length is an average of a running horse’s body length. The Daily Racing Form uses the measure of eight feet per length.
MAIDEN — Until a horse wins a race over a particular type of fence, he is referred to as a maiden in that specialty. A horse can have won lots on the flat but remain a maiden, for instance, over hurdles.
MORNING GLORY — A morning glory is a horse which shows considerable speed and ability during training hours at the farm or track but fails to produce when in competition.
NOVICE — If a horse has not won a race over the prescribed obstacle prior to the start of the current season, he is called a novice.
