weeks. My sister, Nancy, and I traveled as grooms for our parents who rode in the clinics. Mike was grooming for Harry Wight then.
“So during the day when the riders were out, we kept each other company. Nancy and I didn’t really even know the business end of a pitchfork. In his genial way, Mike would encourage us and chide us to do it all better,” he added.
From the intitial friendship cemented that summer, Berryman was comfortable accepting educational guidance and a career boost from the Banner family.
“Dr. Banner wanted to help me further my education,” said Berryman. “I finished my high school [at Dobbins-Bennett High School in Kingsport.] Then I did three years of pre-med at East Tennessee State University.”
The calling to return to horses full time remained however, and Berryman turned his attentions to equestrian pursuits after completing his third year of college. At the Banner’s farm in Kingsport, he had furthered his equine knowledge, working with bloodstock and horses in training — show horses and race horses, both on the flat and over fences.
