They had pot bellied stoves, but they couldn’t really heat the building. “You’ve got to get a linotype up to 70 degrees or it isn’t safe,” she explained. “We managed that first winter, but the next year we built the building,” she said. That is Paul Walker built the building where the present Rappahannock News is located.
The third member of the team was Jack Barber, a printers devil who had come with them from Culpeper. “He was so good natured and so willing to work,” she said. It took some time, however, to convince him to put everything back when he finished with it, she added.
“I think one of the nicest things we had when we first opened up was old Mr. William Compton,” she said. A retired printer he had hand-spiked the Congressional Record, she explained, and they printed his picture
