“His sister said it gave new life to him. He had to get up every morning and walk up the street to smell the printers’ ink. He’d come and sit in the office, or he’d go back and stand and watch the boys hand spike or watch the linotype run or hear the presses,” she said.
Another favorite was Warner Miller. A banker, he came in before the first press run and asked, “Is this paper going to have the name Rappahannock in it?” When she assured him it would be called the Rappahannock News, he said, “I’ll take a 10-year subscription.”
“It was awful hard work,” she said. “But those people were so grateful. They were lovely, charming people. They loved the county, and they were so pleased to have their own paper.”
She was thankful for the support. When one group of women went to Front Royal to shop,they asked the merchants, “Do you advertise in our Rappahannock paper, becuase if you don’t, we don’t think we’ll shop here.”
“Bruce already knew the printing trade upside down and backwards,” Miss Bowie said, “but I had a lot to learn. I think mostly what I learned is what you don’t do. ”
She gave an example. “One day, it was a Thursday morning, we’d just gotten the paper out. I reckon we’d gotten a bath to get the ink off us, and a lady came in, all five feet of her in a perfect tantrum tizzy. She put her finger in my face; she leaned in to me. Bruce and Jack disappeared into the back and left me in the office by myself. She said, ‘I’ll have you know my son it nobody’s groom.’
“That was in horse country. I • said, ‘Madam, you are exactly right. I appologize. I’m sorry. I don’t know how in the world I let that slip by me, but I’ll do anything in the world to make it up to you.’ I knew the forms were lying back there on the ' press. They hadn’t been cleaned and taken off. I said, ‘I’ll reprint it for you. How many copies do you need?’ She said she wanted 20, and I said, ‘You’ll get them. We’ll correct it, and everywhere that word ‘.‘groom” .. appears in the write-up of Vhe wedding, it will say “bridegroom. ’”
‘The boys stayed back there laughing,” she continued. “We reset that wedding, put back in the forms and ran off 20 copies.”
She said she also learned that there are a lot of things she couldn’t print. “You’d go to court and it would be absolutely and howlingly funny, and you had to be very careful how you recorded it,” she said.
