FURLONG — The standard measurement of racing distances, a furlong equals l/8th of a mile, 220 yards or 660 feet.
FLAK JACKET — (also vest, body protector) The National Steeplechase and Hunt Association now requires the use of a protective vest for riders of all sanctioned jump races, and the VSA strongly recommends their usage.
The vest, also popular among eventing aficionados, is made to fit under the silks, often anchored by a tail between the legs. Made of high-density foam, the upper body protector protects the body somewhat from impact injuries and bruising.
