She went back to her very beginning with horses to start her story.
“In the dark ages as a kid growing up in New Jersey, I rode as a ‘stable rat’ in horse shows,’’ Collette reminisced, adding that Frank Chapot of USET fame grew up in the same area, often riding with her as a child.
“I did hunter-jumpers for a while, without too much success,” she went on. “I was married fto Bruce Collette] in 1956, and left the horses for a while.”
Collette graduated from Cornell University with a BA in anthropology. “It was a very interesting curriculum,” she explained. Bruce earned a PhD from the college in “. . . fish.
“Actually, Bruce’s degree is in ichthyology . . . That’s where all of our horse’s names have come from,” she explained, saying that each one is named for a different fish.
Bruce currently works for the Smithsonian Institution, performing field and laboratory studies of underwater life.
