CASANOVA — “I think we’ve really created a monster! Silent Spiral is not so fun for me to take for pleasure hacks anymore,” laughed Pageland Farm owner Sara Collette.
Collette is both delighted and wistful when she discusses her exceptional 1992 Virginia Steeplechase Association racing season, during which her Silent Spiral earned the second in the year’s hurdle division, behind Joe Rogers’ Heart of Oak.
With just three runners in ’92, Collette herself earned second in the leading owner standings, coming within two points of toppling the strong stable of leading owner Rogers.
For those accolades and distinctions, and only for them, is Collette willing to give up her trustworthy ladies’ hack.
“I do still like to ride some of my horses here on the farm,” she sighed as she described how intense a competitor Silent Spiral had become during her ’92 campaign of eight starts, two wins and five seconds.
