In spite of the claim on the masthead, the Rappahannock News has not been in continuous operation since 1877. In fact, when Lucy Catherine Bowie and her brother Bruce Bowie came to Washington to start the modern Rappahannock News in 1949, the county had been without a newspaper for 15 years. » In 1877 The Rappahannock News was given a contract to print the minutes of the Board of Supervisors according to Rappahannock eUounty, Virginia: a History by Elizabeth B. and C. E. Johnson Jr. I The book explains that this paper was succeeded by The Blue Ridge Echo from 1878 to 1883, The Call from 1883-1885, The Blue Ridge Echo again from 1885-1888, and The Blue Ridge Guide, starting in 1889. In 1934 that paper was sold and coniiensed to one page included in the Culpeper Star. ' “That was just the social notes,” Miss Bowie explained. There was no coverage of meetings, schools or kourts. : However, Miss Bowie does not disparage the social notes. “You’ve got to know how to read them,” she explained. “If you hear that the Smiths are heading for a divorce and then you read that they had dinner with her parents, you reevaluate your source for the divorce.”
She said a friend explained the importance of keeping up with gossip. “You don’t want to know that stuff, but you have to,” her friend told her. “If you go somewhere to tea and know that one of the people there has a brother who was just hanged as a horse thief, you don’t want to bring up the subject of rope.”
