START — The start of a steeplechase does not include a starting gate, however there are a variety of ways to ensure a level start in a race. One way is to line entries up behind an elastic starting tape, circle them, call riders to turn for the tape, then release the band to pop across the course.
Riders complain that the tape has been known to fail, though, and more popular is the old fashioned walk-up start which simply entails riders forming a line then turning towards two flagfnen for the start.
In either case, a call-back flagman is posted a few hundred feet up the course to call back a false start.
WALKOVER — A race that scratches down to one starter is declared a walkover. The horse must simply walk across the finish line carrying the prescribed rider and weight to be pronounced the victor. Given the current popularity of steeplechasing, this rarely happens these days.
