Proof positive of the health of the “infield sport,” three new National Steeplechase and Hunt Association race meets will be run this spring.
Brookfield Races in Raleigh, N.C., is set May L Marengo Races near Richmond are slated May 15 and the Willowdale Steeplechase in Kennett Square, Pa., are scheduled May 22.
The nearby Marengo Races will benefit the Historic Richmond Foundation. The non-profit organization unveiled the justbuilt track last September.
Marengo is a 602-acre plantation along the Pamunkey River near Interstate 64. Just eight miles from the estate is the site of a potential flat track, owned by Delmarva Properties Inc.
Marengo’s kidney-bean shaped racing surface is a full mile and 3/10ths. The centerpiece of the attractive course is the 175-year old plantation house.
Running within 60 yards of the Pamunkey River, the course turns gently from the river to enter the final turn up “Heartbreak Hill”, a short distance before the flat homestretch.
