School budget
largely uncut

The Rappahannock County School Board approved most of the proposed budget Tuesday evening, cutting only $300 from those items the members dealt with.
Included in the portion of the budget that met with approval from the four members present was the eight percent across-the-board raise for all employees, including the compressed teacher salary schedule. Also approved was the $88,500 to purchase land for the proposed middle school.
The $300 cut was for repairing a leaky pipe in the high school guidance office. The Board members voted to repair that with this year’s budget rather than let it continue to do damage until the new budget takes effect.
In fact, only a few items were left for consideration during next week’s budget work session, which was scheduled to deal mainly with assigning the budget line items to new categories required by a new budget format. Among those items left for consideration for next week is the proposal to pay 70 percent of a single subscriber's premium for health insurance.
Insurance costs up
Early in the meeting Superintendant David Gangel told the Board members that no insurance company had been willing to make a bid for a statewide school system health plan. Dr. Gangel had expected such a system to be in place and had based his estimates of cost of the program on figures supplied by Richmond which estimated the single subscriber premium at $1,584, and 70 percent of that at $1,109. With no companies bidding for a statewide program. Dr. Gangel said he will have to go back to the system’s current carrier and see if they will give a bid. They had been reluctant to do so because of Rappahannock’s rather low level of participation.
Textbook figure tentative
Another decision left for next week is how much to request to supplement textbook rental fees for purchasing new textbooks. Dr. Gangel had requested $11,138 for that purpose, but said the figure would be firmer when
