Weed seed
quarantined
S. Mason Carbaugh, Commissioner of the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has signed a temporary quarantine for the weed seed serrated tussock — nassella trichotoma.
The 90-day quarantine will give the agency immediate enforcement control over one of the world's 10 worst weeds. If the need continues, the state Board of Agriculture and Consumer Services will consider the issue during its May 17-18 meeting.
The drought of 1988 reduced the amount of available seed of Kentucky 31 tall fescue to approximately 50 percent of the usual production. It is a multipurpose grass seed used extensively for lawn and turf as w-ell as forage.
