This summer Aileen Gordon of Culpeper received her second knee replacement. Just days after surgery when she began walking again and bending her knee, this spunky lady’s physicians discovered cancer in her lung.
At a time when she expected to be recovering from years of knee problems, Gordon is fighting this new battle with characteristic determination and vigor.
"It’s hard for me not to be in control and not be taking steps to improve. It’s hard to relax and let my body get well,” said an energetic Gordon following painful chest surgery. “A dear friend told me to ‘go with the flow.’ This is hard for me, but the advice has been really helpful."
Gordon tried to relax for recuperation, but she and her husband Fred were faced with serious decisions about how she wanted her treatment handled. She is the modern patient, completely involved in all aspects of her care from surgical to spiritual.
"My friends have said that I look relaxed and comfortable, said Gordon, "and I feel it is because I knew my own priorities and made my choices according to what was important to me. My method is not for everyone, but it has been just what I needed.”
