Change is exciting and dynamic... It's a word that sometimes evokes fear and trepidation on the part of the most stouthearted... It can be frustrating and result in confusion... Near record numbers of experts offer an unending selection of educational seminars to help one deal with resistance to change and the stress inherent therewith. Change is the one word that best sums up the year 1988 at Culpeper Memorial Hospital.
The opening of the Giles H. Miller Ambulatory Services Center with the associated Alice H. Strauss Emergency Department is the first step in a major change in focus for CMH. This focus reflects the healthcare industry's change from the provision of services on an inpatient basis to the provision of services on the outpatient side. With the new surgical suite and the remaining renovations being undertaken, CMH will be unusually well positioned to deal with these dynamic changes in our industry. In an era of cost containment, patients no longer have the luxury of staying several days in a hospital bed after minor surgery, but are told by Medicare, Blue Cross and other insurance carriers to go home to recover. Though this change is aimed at reducing the cost of healthcare, it can be frustrating to the patient, the physician, and the hospital who would like to provide inpatient services, but - have the decision taken away from us.
