Ben Martin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Martin of Harper’s Ferry, W.Va., will represent Wakefield School in the Virginia state competition of the National Geographic Geography Bee. Martin will travel to Richmond on April 7 for the state finals, to be held at the Virginia Science Museum on Broad Street.
Of the winners of individual school competitions around the state of Virginia, 100 were selected to complete at the state finals. The competition will feature the best geography students in grades four through eight in the state. Martin is an eighth-grader at Wakefield School in Huntly.
This is the first year for the new geography bee, which is sponsored by National Geographic World, the National Geographic Society’s magazine for children. Contests were held in schools around the nation, and now some of those winners are completing in the various state competitions.
