IRS offers

tax help

Free income tax assistance is available from the Internal Revenue Service to groups and organizations such as small business owners and self-employed persons.

The Community Outreach Tax Assistance Program is designed to provide groups of people who are unable to seek help at IRS offices during normal business hours with information and assistance at convenient times and locations in their community. An IRS representative will inform participants of tax law provisions and recent changes.

Interested groups and organizations can arrange tax seminars which offer discussions, film or videotape showings and question-andanswer sessions to the participants.

Group income tax return preparation sessions alert people to special credits and deductions like the child care credit, earned income credit and tax credits for the elderly as well as helping them with the preparation of their tax returns.

Individuals planning to attend these sessions should bring appropriate tax records and/or background information.

For Community Outreach Tax Assistance locations in your community, call (800) 424-1040 and ask to speak to the Taxpayer Education Coordinator.

“Volunteers are again helping to make taxes less taxing for local residents through several Internal Revenue Service volunteer programs,” said Jack G. Petrie, district director in Richmond.

Both the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) are staffed by IRS-trained volunteers to help people prepare simple tax returns. #

Although the assistance is available to anyone who needs help, handicapped, non-English-speaking and older people may especially find it helpful.

Coiapfunity centers, libraries, churches and shopping malls host VITA and TCE sites. For the nearest"volunteer site and hours of operation, call (800)424-1040.
