Bruce A. Hundley, Social Security manager in Culpeper, notes that this is the time of the year that many people are retiring or making plans to retire soon. These plans should include Social Security, he suggests.
Residents of Rappahannock County who plan to retire before age 65 should know that if they plan to start getting Social Security benefits, these benefits will be reduced. Social Security benefits are permanently reduced for people who start getting them between ages 62 and 65.
The amount of the reduction depends on the number of months benefits are received before the person turns 65. Also, benefits can be paid only for months the person is eligible throughout the entire month.
This means that unless a person is born on the first or second day of a month, they cannot receive a benefit for the month of his or her 62nd birthday.
Also, a person who applies for benefits before age 65 generally cannot get benefits for any month before the month he or she applies. A person who applies after reaching 65 can get benefits for up to six months before the month of application but
