Frye, Roy and Tim and Chris Stringfellow form a very solid shot putting contingent. “Their toughest competition could be from each other this season. Chris and Carroll look to be the strongest, with the senior getting the slight edge over the sophomore (Chris),” Mellott said.

Junior Benji Roy had an excellent season in ’88 at the high jump and should join Dunn atop the district this year. Seniors Joey Bodkin and Stuart Gaines will add even more strength to the jumping events.

Sophomore Matt Eidson already has Coach Scott smiling about longdistance events. “He recently ran the mile in five minutes and 11 seconds. I have great expectations for him in the future,” she said.

The Panthers also look strong in the speed events. At the 100- and 200-meter dashes, junior Shannon Horne has both coaches happy. Scott and Mellott are also pleased with their hurdlers: Zack Allen, Jeremy Tole and Tobey Waterbury. All three should do well this year, but even more encouraging is that they are all sophomores.

The girls’ team also has their share of young talent, none more promising than the hurdling combination of sophomore Sarah Bartlett and freshman Celeste Waggener. Sarah is recovering from a recent knee injury and will be out for the first half of the season. Coach Mellott expects her to be able to return and repeat last year’s successful regional performance. Mellott couldn’t say enough about Celeste, who will also do the 100-meter dash, which immediately follows the 100 hurdles. “It could be real hard on her, but she’s strong and so fast,” he said.
