Virginia has already taken small steps toward encouraging the production of truck farming and the move to vegetable growth. “It is not enough to say ‘yes, we like to raise cattle or growT sweet potatoes.’ We must be able to sell our products and sell them profitably — whether it be in exports to other nations, retail to our more urban customers who cannot raise the products for themselves, or wholesale to the entire East Coast,” said Del. Guest.
Del. Guest is the author of the Virginia Farm Wineries Act, and according to the state legislator, “In 1979, there were two farm wineries in Virginia. Since my bill became law, more than 40 other farm wineries have come into existence — all generating economic activity and opportunities.”
“The governor of Virginia'should have as one of his own highest priorities helping the state’s farmers to be able to sell their livestock or crops at a reasonable profit," Del. Guest said.
Mr. Guest, during his tenure as a Virginia legislator, has been the sponsor of the pari-mutuel bill. He also introduced a study resolution and was chairman of a joint HouseSenate subcommittee that led to the creation of the Virginia Horse Center near Lexington. He has also sponsored legislation that has led to the modernization of Virginia's game laws. This has won him the Legislator of the Year award from the Virginia Wildlife Federation.
