The following year, in 1969, the current elementary school was ready, all the other county elementary schools were closed, and Mr. Fountain has been there since, making sure all of Rappahannock’s students learn something about the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans.

He is beginning to see some of his former students as the parents of his current students.

Mr. Fountain believes that on the whole the process of integration was positive for all of Rappahannock’s ’ students.

"There was a lot of anticipation in the beginning,” he said. “It was a new thing for all concerned. From the black ,.^..._

He did not find the students in the integrated school much different from the black students he had been teaching. “There may have been some lack of opportunity, for some, but the gap has been closed over a period of time, through a well-thought-out program,” he said.
