David Smith will be the new elementary school principal starting in July. Mr. Smith is currently serving as assistant principal at the high school.
The School Board announced Mr. Smith’s appointment after interviewing him and elementary school assistant principal Raye Tupper at a special meeting Tuesday night.
Mr. Smith has been assistant principal and athletic director at the high school for two years. Before coming to Rappahannock, Mr. Smith served as principal at an elementary school in Craig County. Prior to that he had served as assistant principal in Manassas. Before going into administration, he spent 10 years as a band teacher in elementary and secondary schools in Virginia. „
Assistant Superintendent Robert Chappell said that the school system had received about 12 applications fpr the principal’s job. He and Superintendent David Gangel interviewed six of them and narrowed the selection process to the two assistant principals already working in the county school system.
