The Rappahannock High girls softball team had plenty of momentum but no experience during the first round of the Bull Run District playoffs Monday, falling to the league’s top team, Page County, 4-1.
In the program’s third year the Lady Panthers won more games than ever before and made the district playoffs, another first. With a young team and having gained the much-needed experience, they are looking forward to next year.
“We’ve come a long way — a lot farther than anybody thought,” said Coach Renee Leake. The Lady Panthers finished up 12-5. The previous best record was last year’s 7-9 mark.
In fact, the Lady Panthers started the year with five losses in a row, and were wondering if their preseason goal of winning half their games was realistic. “Our goal was to take them one game at a time, and we did. It was a very successful season,” said Coach Leake.
On Monday Page scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning, enough to hold off Rappahannock and advance to Wednesday’s district title game against Clarke. The win over Rappahannock put Page’s overall record at 18-1. Page averages 14 runs per game.
This year the Lady Panthers set other records, including most wins by a pitcher (Susan Payne, with 12), the best individual and team ERA (Payne’s 2.53), and the longest winning streak (nine games).
