The State Senate voted Tuesday to approve a series of amendments to the senate redistricting bill which includes splitting Rappahannock County between two senate districts.
Wakefield, Hampton, Piedmont and Jackson districts will remain in the 26th Senatorial District currently represented by Kevin Miller, R-Harrisonburg. Stonewall-Hawthom District was put in the 25th Senatorial District, currently represented by Thomas Michie Jr., DCharlottesville.
The amendments were introduced as a substitute amendment and are not themselves subject to amendment. They passed 23 to 13 in the Senate and 47 to 44 in the House of Delegates.
A further complication is that the senate bill used the old lines for Stonewall-Hawthom District, which were changed by the county’s own redistricting.
At least for the 1991 election that will mean that new voters in Stonewall-Hawthom District, who had been in Jackson District, will get 26th District ballots for the state senator, while the other voters in the district get 25th District ballots.
In Piedmont District, voters recently moved there from StonewallHawthom District will get 25th District ballots, while the other voters in the district get 26th District ballots.
When they were questioned Monday, both Sen. Miller and Sen. Michie said they believed this situation could be changed by an amendment to the senate districting bill before the state senators again face elections in 1995.
The plan could be altered to make the lines for the senate districts correspond to the lines the Board of Supervisors recently adopted in the county’s redistricting.
