State Police and local law enforcement agencies in Fauquier and Rappahannock counties are joining law officers across Virginia in increasing highway patrols over the Memorial Day weekend.
Last year there were no highway deaths in Fauquier or Rappahannock, and Sgt. D.S. Adams of the State Police in Warrenton said his troopers aim to prevent any from happening this week.
Seventy-five percent of Virginia’s state troopers will be working over the holiday, paying particular attention to drunk driving violations, speeding, drivers and passengers without seat belts and other safety concerns.
At a press conference in Culpeper Monday, Capt. Ron Stalls of the Fauquier Sheriffs Office said four deputies will be on patrol at all times over the weekend and efforts will be coordinated with state and Warrenton police to cut down holiday traffic accidents.
Sgt. Adams called the weekend effort “rigid enforcement and high visibility.”
Trooper Don Johnson, a former road trooper in Fauquier who conducts accident reconstruction for the Culpeper office, said almost 95 percent of all traffic fatalities involve driver error.
“I have yet to see an accident where the use of a seat belt was the contributing factor to the fatality,” said Trooper Johnson.
The Virginia State Police is trying to achieve the goal set by President Bush of 70 percent seat belt use by 1992.
