He said investigators are now assuming that all five birds were drawn to bait that was deliberately placed and poisoned.
He said there is still a $10,000 reward for information about the eagle killing. The person giving the information will not have to give his name or testify in court, he said, but will be eligible for all or part of the reward if his tip leads to a conviction.
“What we are looking for is information on people losing sheep to predators, especially anyone in sheep production employing unorthodox methods to deal with sheep predation,” he said.
“A baited carcass is an indiscriminate killer,” he added. “It may be used to get any animal that scavanges, anything from the family dog to a curious blue jay. This is the kind of thing that kills all sorts of wildlife.”
He said trying to stop livestock predation by using a baited carcass is usually ineffective. “Dogs killing sheep are usually not hungry,” he Said. “They’re doing it for the joy of chasing. It’s a big game to them.”
