Jail escape

shows flaws

To the Editor:

In light of the most recent escape from the county jail, are we, the citizens of Rappahannock, getting what we pay for? Are our tax dollars being wisely spent to protect our families from known criminals?

Somehow I am not so sure. Last week’s escape from our county jail has caused me to ask some simple questions. Why have we had four escapes from our jail in seven years (two by the same person), considering on average there are 14 prisoners a day? Why were they left unattended?

Why wasn’t additional help called in after the escape and the area closed off or dogs used to apprehend a convicted felon?

Those of us with police scanners heard no real effort made to return Dickie Walters into custody. Our safety doesn’t seem important.
