chorus to give

performance

The Arlington Metropolitan Chorus will perform a concert of 19th century songs from Great Britain and the American South at The Theatre at Washington at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 1.

The concert, which is scheduled to last about an hour, will include music of Stephen Foster, folk songs, and madrigals. Ordinarily based across the river from the “other” Washington, the chorus will sing at the theater (located at the comer of Gay and Jett streets) under the direction of Barry S. Hemphill, its music director for 14 years.

Mr. Hemphill is the enlisted conductor of the renowned U.S. Army Chorus.

Theater manager Wendy Weinberg invited the chorus to present this special program in Rappahannock County.

“Children do not always have the chance to hear the folk music of an earlier era,” she commented, “and people of all ages will enjoy the exceptional performance of the Arlington Metropolitan Chorus.”

Other choral and madrigal groups will be invited to the theater in the future, she said.

The Arlington Metropolitan Chorus is about to begin its 25th season. The Washington Post has praised the chorus’s “clear tone” and “fine tapestry of sound.” Intermission magazine has referred to its work as “a choral tour de force” and noted that “Hemphill’s conducting is simply outstanding.”

The chorus has performed at the Kennedy Center and throughout the Washington metropolitan area, and has participated in international music festivals in Europe and South America.

Admission to the concert will be free to children under 12, $2 for older students, and $5 for adults.

Tickets will be on sale from 6 p.m. at the box office on the day of the performance.
