Severe scaling of the deck and deterioration of the center pier places a low safety factor rating on the bridge, according to Bob Moore, Warrenton resident engineer of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).
The department did not want the bridge to reach such a condition that it would require reducing the weight limit of the structure, he said.
The existing 23-foot wide bridge, constructed in the mid-1920s, will be widened to 28 feet. The abutments at both ends will be reconstructed and the center pier now under the bridge removed and a new singlespan deck installed. When the deck installation is completed, the top will be surfaced to finish the bridge.
Two-stage construction will permit one traffic lane of the bridge to remain open to traffic.
Traffic will travel over one lane of the existing bridge until the first half of the new bridge is finished, and then traffic will use the new bridge while construction is completed.
Widening will occur toward the upstream side of the existing bridge.
Motorists can expect completion within the 120 days permitted under the contract.
