Garden Club
gives flower
arranging talk
A bit of imagination and a lot of ingenuity serve as our allies when unusual containers are used for flower arranging — that was the subject of Margarite Tuthill’s talk to the Rappahannock County Garden Club at its May 15 meeting at the Washington Fire Hall.
Mrs. Tuthill used the dictionary as a source in defining the word “contrived” as applied to unique containers.
Glass bottles, pottery pieces and oriental style containers were suggested by her for our consideration.
Christine Johnston, Edna Metzinger and Pauline Bruce were hostesses for this meeting. Members were asked to bring an iris to be judged, and an arrangement using only flowers from the field.
Blue ribbons were won by Breezy Gannon, Virginia Scott, Frances Russell, Elisabeth Johnson, and Helen Smith. Red ribbon winners were Marjorie Exton, Mary Stuart Bain, Helen Fairfax, Helen Holschuh and Marion Reeve.
Other awards went to Jane Peterson, Ruth Baumgardner, Marcia Doelman and Barbara Colvin.
The president announced that the club had received a national award for its newsletter. The letter is prepared and mailed to each member on the week preceding the monthly meeting. Dorothy Mank has been the editor of this letter for many years.
A report followed on the work done at the county courthouse at the club’s annual spring planting and maintenance workday.
The State Convention for 1992 will be held in Charlottesville.
Two students from Rappahannock County will be attending Nature Camp sponsored by the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs. Reservations were then made for our annual business luncheon meeting on June 19 at the Luray Inn.
