Lois Manookian’s one-person show, “Gates and Meadows,” is set to open June 1 at Middle Street Gallery.
The 20-piece watercolor show is familiar soft colors of Rappahannock County and vivid contrasts of light and detail of the British Isles.
Each piece captures the beauty of meadows, gates and the detailed precision only the artist can perfect.
“I love watercolors,” the artist said, sitting in a newly built studio at her home, Meadow House, soon to be her gallery in Little Washington. Around her one-story home the meadow stretches and bends in the morning breeze.
“Watercolors are like a metaphor for living,” Mrs. Manookian said. “You let it happen yet your skill controls it.”
When she is disappointed with the work her brush creates on the canvas, she never throws it away, she says.
“I put it aside and get it out a few months later. It shows me what I need to work on or details I do like.
“Whatever happens, happens. You can not redo your work or change the canvas but, when it works it’s fabulous, real bliss,” she said with a smile.
And while Mrs. Manookian describes the watercolors as a metaphor for life, the show is a metaphor for herself.
“I started painting in England and Wales and I noticed that many of the prints included meadows and gates,” she said.“It is a time of passing for me — climbing the gate and passing through the meadow. It’s always interesting to see what is on the other side of the gate. ”
Passing through the stages of life, Mrs. Manookian takes on changes of her own with a move, a new home, a studio, a new gallery and a life without her late husband.
