Clarifying
his position
To the Editor:
Although I appreciated the opportunity the Rappahannock News afforded me to express my position in running for sheriff, the resulting article (“Challenger to run against incumbent sheriff,” May 9) offered me less than a fair hearing.
It was my understanding the article would inform the county citizens of my goals as sheriff — not provide a forum in which my opponent could demqnstrate the “profitability” of the office under his leadership. Therefore, I feel compelled to clarify several points that may have led to a misunderstanding of my position.
1. To clarify my position on radar - no one questions the importance of radar to enforce the speed limit; however, I believe there is overkill of radar in the county. The highways are patroled by state troopers. The Sheriffs Office should patrol the towns in response to citizens’ concern for safety - not for a source of revenue as the current sheriff boasts.
2. As for patroling the landfill - I believe the dumpsters should be patroled as per request of the Board of Supervisors; however, this doesn’t mean a deputy should be sitting there for hours at a time. This only encourages illegal dumping to occur on private property.
3. No one can fault the incumbent for attempting to make the Sheriffs Office a profit center; however, generating a profit should not be a top priority. The current sheriffs position that $17,000 profit was generated by the county jail did nothing to keep last week’s escape from occurring.
Profit at the expense of citizen security - what is the cost?
I feel that citizens of the county will provide the answer this November.
