A few moments earlier; Frazier made a failed motion to budget $12,006,934 for the schools’ coming fiscal year. That amount would not have required any property-tax increase.
But the other supervisors said they felt the figure was too low, and ultimately agreed with Wayland’s suggested amount.
This has been the most difficult year we’ve had in the budget process,” Welch said. “We’ve never bad so many people come forward against increasing the budget.”
He said the root of the "opposition * came last year from the rise in property assessments coupled with a tax increase that in some cases doubled landowners’ tax burden.
Tike everyone else, I was hoping the school budget would come in showing some leniency if nothing else, toward the general public,” Welch said.
Tve sat here fix* 10 years and I’ve seen school budgets with 10,12 and an average of 9.3 percent increase,” Welch said. “You’d think the rate would gp up by the inflation rate and it hasn’t done that”
He mentioned that the inflating rate for last 10 years has never gone above 4.15 percent, while the average was 3.24 percent.
The requested school budget this year called for a 6 percent increase in funding.
