The horse’s 2007 campaign began more hopefully, with a consistent jumping performance and second-place finish to winner Ghost Valley April 21 at Middleburg Spring. Robbie Walsh was aboard.

“He takes a quiet ride,” said Miller, who remembered about the horse’s sensitivity from his sole race with Salmo last spring. “You have to just let him go. Fortunately, today, that worked.”

What they say

• Runner-up Paddy Young lost the $100,000 race on a “head-bob” with Mr. Bombastic: “Jack (Fisher, the trainer) told me the horse only had ‘one run’ so I set him out the back early. Fd won on him over hurdles (a maiden race at Montpelier in 2004) and thought he was a doubtful stayer, but turns out he’s just got that one run, no matter how far you’re going.

“Jack left it up to me where to place him. I didn’t want to leave too much to do, so I relaxed the horse first time “round, and crept into (contention) the second circuit. He jumped the water well (19 of 23 fences) and I thought we had a good chance.
