“I thought that was them really groping to see if they had something,” Harris said Tuesday, adding that he felt like authorities in Spotsylvania County were holding on to him because they didn’t have any other suspects.
Spotsylvania authorities still do not have any other suspects.
Neely said the fingerprints have not been matched to anyone, so the case remains unsolved.
He also said he will not oppose Harris’s efforts to file for an expungement.
“It’s only fair to clear Mr. Harris’s criminal record,” Neely said.
But Spotsylvania County authorities do not plan to issue an apology to Harris, the commonwealth’s attorney said, pointing out that the clerk working at the ABC store when it was robbed identified Harris as the robber.
“It just appears that he bears an uncanny resemblance to the perpetrator,” Neely said.
“It’s just an honest mistake,” he continued. “These things are rare, but they do happen.”
