Frazier said kindergarten classes have averaged 70 students over the past eight years and 88 students will graduate from RCHS this year.
He asked, “Do we have any kind of a downsizing plan for this declining enrollment that we would normally have in place if we were seeing less customers?”
In the private sector, fewer customers means fewer employees, he said, but the schools have been hiring more employees as enrollment declines.
Wayland asked how salaries for experienced teachers compared to those in surrounding counties. The main source of the proposed budget increase was a 4.5percent pay raise far school employees.
Chappell said the starting salary for a teacher in the county schools is $34,502 - which is lower than that in the five surrounding counties.
But Rappahannock schools’ employees are rewarded for longevity in the county’s school system.
Three of the five surrounding counties have higher salaries for teachers with five and 10 years of experience. And two neighboring counties have higher salaries for educators with 15 and 20 years of experience.
