Ready-set-grow
The fourltrst-grade classes at Rappahannock County Elementary School were recently treated to a Ready, Set, Grow program presented by Virginia Cooperative Extension Master Gardener volunteers, Jack and Sally Price. This program is offered in conjunction with 4-H and is presented nationwide where there are volunteers available. About 70 children enjoyed a slide program. The students were then divided into two groups for a hands-on show and teH program about seeds and a planting session. Each student was able to participate in each program. They were fascinated with using a magnifying glass to examine all kinds of seeds and enjoyed comparing them to a coconut which is the largest seed. The students will nurture the seeds they planted in cups right there in the classroom window. When asked what was happening when a person blows on a dandelion puff, the students explained that the person was making a wish! The Master Gardeners thought that seeds were being dispersed! Sally has been a Master Gardener for seven years, and Jack for two years. To remain active VCE Master Gardners, volunteers must donate 20 hours each year to community teaching activities. Also, eight hours of recertification training must be completed.
