A day after the Rappahannock Board of Supervisors voted to lower the school board's requested budget increase, the school board voted Tuesday night to make cuts.
Rappahannock County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Robert Chappell said that he met with his Finance Committee to adjust the proposed budget to meet the Board of Supervisors reduction of local funds. The Board of Supervisors approved a motion that reduced the additional amount of local funding from $494,968 to $310,000 for the 2007-08 school year.
Dr. Chappell said that although the proposed increase was cut, he was pleased with the amount approved by the Board. “We appreciate the Board of Supervisors’ support for the School Board’s efforts to make our schools ‘second to none.’ Rappahannock’s children deserve the best education we can provide for them."
Vice Chairperson of the School board and Piedmont Representative Aline Johnson was pleased with the compromise between the boards. “I thought that the supervisors have done the best that they could do, and we’ve done the best we could do with what they gave us," she said, “We have worked out a plan to make cuts without hurting the students."
Wakefield School Board Representative Rosa Crocker was impressed with the amount of people that spoke during the budget process. “The public was very vocal this year," said Crocker after the budget was approved. “It was good to have people engaged in the process."
